What did Hugo want his readers to understand from the Preface?  What did he see as the purpose of this book?

Who is Charles Myriel?
  • What was his life like before the Revolution?
  • Where did he go during the Revolution?
  • How did he change?
  • What is his new job?

Who are Mademoiselle Baptistine and Madame Magloire?  How are they different?

What techniques does Victor Hugo (the author) use to introduce these characters?  Does he use direct characterization or indirect characterization? Can you find an example for each?
